This Brazilian bakery owner won the Green Card Lottery and went on to work with perseverance to achieve his so called American Dream. What I can say about this is that I now believe that luck is sort of a fictive of abstact aspect of achieving the dream.

    1. I feel like this is a good representation of the American Dream. Doing what you love and being happy. It was a sweet video that got to the point.

    2. I heard that if you win a lottery your life changes in a negative way. Is the Brazilian bakery owner the same?

    3. I've never even heard of something called "the Green Card Lottery", it was really cool learning some new information

    4. For some, the American Dream can just simply be to win the lottery.

    5. It was quite interesting to know about "the green card lottery" I personally did not know about it. I'm glad that he got to accomplish what he wanted with help. I bet everyone would have liked help like he got.

    1. I can relate to the person that said that the term isn't particularly relevant to their life anymore. I feel like the goals are still there but the term it self is getting outdated. I never actually heard of the American Dream until this class but my goals of being successful have always stood.

    2. Absolutely! The American dream can be interpreted very differently today compared to the past. Personally, I see the dream as a goal one wants to achieve specifically in America since it is said to be the "land of opportunities".

    1. What do you mean treat obesity? Do you mean how people treat others that are obese or how we can resolve the issue obesity?

      Delete
    2. @Linda Ever since obesity was classified as a medical condition doctors and other healthcare professionals are encouraged to treat it like they would with another condition (medication or even surgery). You can decide if that positive or negative.

      Delete
    3. I do no necessarily believe obesity is the issue rather an outcome of another problem. The main problem is diet, the way people eat. If we can promote healthy dieting or teach how to control our intake of high calorie food, obesity might not be a hard issue to resolve. Yet, there are so many problems that results in obesity other than diet that has made obesity harder to prevent.

      Delete
    4. Obesity would not be a problem in this world if the governments and manufactures actually cared about their consumers. A lot of the healthy snacks and meals are expensive while all of the junk food/ unhealthy options are the cheapest/fastest way to go when you are on a budget.

      Delete
    5. I do not think obesity can be treated medically, but it can be reduced if people would eat more nutritious foods. But, some think that they have to stop eating what they love and turn to salads and vegetables; when all they have to do is cut back on eating the junk foods and carbs.

A recent advertisement by the company IKEA talks about how the household in American Dream has changed from "bigger the better" to now being the more about the memorable experiences that you have in the home no matter what size. I don't know if the adverseness is effective to persuade people to buy IKEA products, its intention is probability to make the company seem more human/personal.

I Want A Dyke For President by Zoe Leonard states how she wants a presidential candidate who has experienced the same hardships that "regular" and lower class people experience throughout their everyday lives. I feel like this is what our current presidential election is lacking, candidates who can relate to our struggles and show humane characteristics.

    2. I really appreciate the bluntness of the author, it helps the audience to better relate to the message, which I completely agree with. Politicians are usually so fake, portraying themselves as perfect people but we don't need a perfect president, we need a real president.

This is a definition of what the ideal American dream is supposed to be. Which includes freedom and prosperity for everyone. In the Declaration of Independence it states " all men are created equal ". The intent of this statement was to support the idea of an American dream by helping people believe they have an equal fair chance at whatever they do .

This is actually one of the sources I found for my research paper and I think it is incredibly powerful and effectively sheds light on why terrorist groups are expanding and recruiting young Americans even. Once we understand why it's happening I believe we can then work on prevention but combating terrorist groups with force only warrants for more violence.

This article describes how rape isn't universally defined and it definitely should be. "Turner is not technically a rapist because he didn’t penetrate his victim with his penis. Instead, prosecutors could only charge him with sexual assault — a lesser charge — because he penetrated her with a foreign object, his finger." This quote makes me so upset.

    1. I also think that we should solve the problem of how we define rape.

      Delete
    2. Incidents such as the one that happened in the case of Brock Turner will continue to happen because of the fact that the definition of rape isn't as serious or punishable as it should be.

This video explains how certain people view domestic violence and sexual assuault as women's problems when they are actually men's problems as well. One strong point jackson makes that is very relevant to my research is that some women stay in abusive relationships because they fear victim blaming. They fear being ridiculed "making the man unhappy", which is something that sadly is very prominent in society today. Women feel embarrassed feel that they'll be blamed if they were to try and get help.
