ReplyDeleteIn this newspaper article, Tim Rymel talks about the presidential candidate Donald Trump and his unacceptable "locker room talk." Rymel provides a lot of statistics on female and rape; he also mentioned how sickening it is that 51% of men would rape someone if they could get away with it. This article talks about white privilege through the example of rape and sexual assualt.
"Gender equality doesn’t make men any less men than marriage equality makes heterosexual married couples any less married. It simply levels the playing field giving women equal rights, equal pay, and equal respect."
DeleteNot once have I seen anyone argue that gender equality makes a man less of a man; if this isn't a straw man than I don't know what is.
"Even in light of strong evidence to the contrary, we tend to react by how we feel."
The article goes on to fulfill itself by including the gender wage gap as an issue despite countless studies going against it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjWBXbGVyQU
Addressing the 1 in 5 rape statistic brought up in the article, the study done by the department of justice was based on a web based survey with a low response rate. It used two unnamed public universities which is a problem in and of itself considering how different schools tend to be and it uses varying definitions of sexual assault. Honestly I would have much less of a problem if the article stated sexual assault instead of rape, but it insists that 1 in 5 women are raped. As for "51% of men would rape someone if they could get away with it.." really? I've known people that have fantasized about being raped but I can assure you that they don't really want it to happen. Stick to the statistics because thought policing will get us nowhere.

ReplyDeleteThis article states that about half of people aged 18 to 29 recently surveyed said that the American dream is dead. It goes on to claim that these people are wrong and that they've misinterpreted the dream as a promise. The article uses the existence of companies such as Apple, Starbucks, Walmart, etc. as evidence towards "The American dream is alive and well and achievable by each and every one of us, except those who believe it’s unattainable and those who choose not to pursue it."
"The American dream is alive and well and achievable by each and every one of us, except those who believe it’s unattainable and those who choose not to pursue it." I agree with this quote! Very powerful.
DeleteEveryone should have their own definitions of American Dream, rather than having too expectation on it.
DeleteI personally believe that the American dream is not dead but it is not the same as before that is why some claim it is dead.

ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2015/01/01/is-the-modern-american-dream-attainable/the-american-dream-is-alive
ReplyDeletethis article says that the American Dream is still alive. based on econmic annuel growth. it still the envy of other country that are not so develope. alot of people still want to come to america.
"The bottom line is that there are many problems that should be addressed, but perfect isn’t the enemy of the good." I think this quote was really powerful in the article.
DeleteI think this article is not strong enough to convince people.
DeleteI agree that this article could have done more to persuasively pose their argument.
DeleteThis article was short and not very informative. Also, the American dream may still be alive for people who are from poorer countries, but what about the people who are already here in America?

ReplyDeleteThis article is about how a college student, who was attacked his girlfriend and a person who tried to help her, was able to skip Anger Management classes as well as not showing up for his weekend work, and was still able to continue to play football and build his career up. He has not been reprimanded by the law and will not be fully rehabilitated knowing he can get away with things. As Kathleen Krenek, executive director of Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence, says “The lesson is, nothing is going to happen to me and I can belt her even harder the next time because she knows the system won’t do anything.”
This reminded me of Brock Turner. I wonder if the patriarchy would take rape more seriously if it was more common among men.
DeleteIt's so messed up how just because if a guy is an athlete or white that he can get away with rape. Taking advantage of someone just because you feel you are able to do as you please is wrong and all rapist need to be punished for their actions, no one should be allowed a get out of jail pass for such a horrific and emotionally damaging act.
DeleteIt's enraging how many people get away with their actions these days.

ReplyDeleteThis article explains why American Dream died out. One of her major point is that how can people still believe in American Dream when those who have achieved the American Dream refused to acknowledge their success.

ReplyDeleteThis Youtube video is a parody of the 1st presidential debate that took place this year. Donald Trump is played by Alec Baldwin and Hillary Clinton is played by Kate McKinnon who face off in the first presidential debate, moderated by Lester Holt played by Michael Che. The purpose of the video was to really exaggerate and show what each candidate is like. The American Dream for some may be to be able to elect a president that is capable of maintaining the rights and freedom the people deserve and yet these candidates are showing the lack of trust in executing such task.
I agree with you that the presidential candidates are not responsible and untrustworthy. Is the American Dream your research topic?
DeleteThis election is a joke. Each of candidates main argument is "Hey, I am bad but at least am not as bad as the other guy".

ReplyDeleteThis is a meme I found that relates to what I'm looking to addressing in my research paper. As subjects to medias many influences we often look at terrorism through one, very patriotic perspective. What we are told and what is constantly being reinforced is more likely than not, only a fraction of the whole truth.
I found this meme interesting solely because I believed it contradicted itself.
DeleteThe issue of global terrorism alot more complicated than just the US supporting Israel.
Deletehttp://everydayfeminism.com/2014/04/rape-culture-address-3-things/
ReplyDeleteThis article is saying that in order to end rape culture there are precisely 3 things that need to be addressed; we must not confine to gender norms, the topic of rape culture must be known to all, and finally fix the American prison system (its bias ways).
This post was informative little did I know that 3% would be punish for their crimes.
DeleteI agree with many of the points that this article made.

i found this article very interesting

ReplyDeleteIn this 30+ minute long video, which is an excerpt from the HBO television show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. He discusses the importance of our privacy when the government is conducting national security measures, like the NSA. While the video is very funny, that does not mean that the points are not meant to be serious. The comedy is used to make the information more digestible and easy to sit through and understand. He even conducts an interview with Edward Snowden, the person who leaked illegal spying of United States citizens by the NSA. He argues that we should care about what the government was doing and make our voices heard.

ReplyDeleteThis poem was written by Langston Hughes explaining his views of America and the American dream. He expresses that the ideal "America" is a dream. America was supposed to be a land of freedom, without kings and tyrants but has peace but he has never experienced that.
